Oil giant Shell has deployed a satellite-based asset management system from Globalstar in the Netherlands to manage its movable assets on land and at sea, providing a ‘track and trace’ service to keep track of location and assist in managing certification.

Following successful trials on the Iceni Conquest, UK-based AST Marine Sciences Ltd (MSL) has been awarded a contract to install its iRAMS remote vessel management package and AST-Planned Maintenance System software on board the Iceni Marine Services’ fleet of vessels.

Marlink reports that it has extended the bandwidth and connectivity options available to both MSC Cruises and Stena Line, covering a total of more than 35 existing ships among the two operators as well as further newbuilds.

PressReader becomes Inmarsat CAP

Inmarsat has announced a partnership with PressReader to bring its newspaper and magazine service to vessels at sea over the Inmarsat-4 network, the satellite infrastructure which powers the FleetBroadband service.

Marlink and SpeedCast have signed new ‘strategic alliances’ with Inmarsat, under which both satcom service providers have committed to each introducing approximately 2,000 vessels to Inmarsat’s new Fleet Xpress service over a five-year period – a total of some 4,000 new ships for the Ka-band VSAT service.

Springfield Shipping Co of Greece is to extend its use of Eniram’s energy efficiency technology across its VLCC vessels.

SES-9 enters commercial service

The new SES-9 satellite has successfully completed testing and has now entered commercial service, offering Ku-band capacity across Asia-Pacific from its orbital position at around 108.2 degrees East.

DNV GL and Prisma Electronics have signed a partnership agreement on fleet performance management which will see Prisma’s LAROS system, a wireless onboard data collection platform for vessel performance management, used by DNV GL’s ECO Insight portal as part of its fleet performance analytics.

DNV GL reports that it has recently completed its first production surveys using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drone, with 14 tanks on the MV Apollo, a chemical tanker owned by Carl Büttner Shipmanagement in Bremerhaven, Germany, inspected over a period of two and a half days by two DNV GL surveyors.
