ClassNK, Japan Marine United (JMU), and NAPA have completed a joint feasibility study on 3D model-based plan approval using 3D CAD models as part of their technical investigation project.

Shipbuilding designs are gradually transitioning from 2D drawings to those designed with 3D CAD software. Classification societies, whose plan approvals are currently based mostly on 2D drawings, are also required to develop a scheme for 3D CAD models from their submission to their examination completion.

This project was conducted to examine the technical development required in each process of plan approval by JMU, NAPA, and ClassNK to realise 3D model-based plan approval. In the feasibility study, ClassNK conducted a trial evaluation for hull structural design on a 3D CAD model of 300,000DWT ore carrier designed and created by JMU, using NAPA Designer, a 3D CAD software application for ship design developed by NAPA, as a 3D model viewer. Plan submission, storage, and notification of examination results were made using the Society's electronic plan examination system NK-PASS.

The investigation concluded that information required for class approval can be confirmed through a 3D CAD model, and that "NK-PASS" is also compatible with 3D CAD models. The results of this survey will serve as a basis for future technical studies, and the Society will continue to work with the industry to realise 3D model-based plan approval.

Mr. Hayato Suga, corporate officer and director of plan approval and technical solution division said “This study has proven the future potential of 3D model-based approvals. 3D based design can be the key to improving digital solutions in the ship industry, including the ship design process, approval process and later fleet maintenance. I hope that the entire industry will also quickly realise the many opportunities and increased efficiency that can be achieved as a result of this initiative. The vessels of the future will be able to accommodate much better and safer designs in shorter amounts of time.”

Podium launches with a series of in-house options including voyage monitoring, weather routing and StratumFive’s next generation compliance and tracking applications.

shipznet RG 300 is a mobile 4G/LTE solution with 300 Mbit/sec and coverage up to 60km ship to shore. It has been specifically developed for maritime use. The connectivity provided by RG 300 allows the exchange of photos, videos, technical drawings or to retrieve spare part catalogues. Direct video conferencing with qualified personnel is also possible.

Using the shipznet solution, service employees are able to use mobile broadband connectivity in the engine room via mobile phone, tablet, laptop, or any mobile device. This can significantly shorten the on-site service calls as employees do not have to be on deck to use their mobile phones for finding the answers to technical questions they have.

According to shipznet, waiting time for feedback, because no specialist is available in the office, should not be underestimated. shipznet RG 300 enables remote communication by specialists in the headquarters. This means that experts do not always have to be present for the service operations on site. According to shipznet, experts are expensive and difficult to obtain and in many cases service employees are “instructed” remotely by the experts.

The system enables service staff to operate far inside the ship while being connected to remote experts and engineers on shore.  This is especially important in today’s current climate with COVID-19 affecting business as usual. With service travels currently limited or impossible due to health concerns, shipznet RG 300 service experts can help remotely look deep inside a ship without travelling. 

shipnetz’s RG 300 solution is currently in use at some large service companies. It is delivered in a small suitcase with handy size format. The construction of the 4G / LTE antenna with a range of up to 60km ship to shore and the router with 300 Mbit / sec. is possible within 15 minutes, according to shipznet.

The purchase of the shipznet RG 300 will reportedly pay for itself after a single service call.
