Ship manager Anglo-Eastern has completed the successful roll-out of DNV GL’s Navigator Port to its fleet of more than 600 vessels.
Navigator Port software is used onboard several thousand ships for management of port documentation, assisting seafarers in navigating the administrative and regulatory complexity of port clearance and passage through controlled waters.
“One of the most time-consuming tasks onboard is preparing port documentation,” said Captain Pradeep Chawla, managing director, QHSE and training at Anglo-Eastern. “We have brought in Navigator Port to reduce the administrative burden and ensure quality of the reporting. This is especially important on ships where the port of call is not known well in advance.”

Navigator Port facilitates compliance with requirements from charterers and port authorities. Approximately 1,400 port clearance forms are automatically filled in with ship data, so the required paperwork can be prepared in a few minutes. The system reports directly to maritime authorities, such as the Electronic Notice of Arrival/Departure (eNOAD) to the United States Coast Guard, and the Electronic Pre-Arrival Notification (ePAN) to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
In addition, Navigator Port includes a database of information about all the world’s ports and terminals based on publications and data from IHS Markit Ports & Terminals Guide, ADMIRALTY List of Radio Signals (Volume 6) and other sources. In all, paperwork can be reduced by up to 90 per cent.

Almi Tankers S.A. has become one of the first maritime companies in Greece to be awarded ISO 27001 certification by global certification and assurance company Lloyd’s Register (LR).
Almi Tankers has been awarded ISO 27001 certification for its Information Security Management System (ISMS), demonstrating that the company has reached the high quality demanded from this internationally recognised Standard.
The certificate was presented by y Philippa Charlton, BA & IS marketing director at LR to Almi Tanker’s CEO Capt. Stylianos Dimouleas at a ceremony at the company’s headquarters in Athens.
CEO Capt. Stylianos Dimouleas thanked his team for this success and commented: “We are all affected by ISO 27001 requirements on a daily basis. We took a major step to ensure that a robust Information Management System and Cyber Security System are in place and in line with EU GDPR Directives.”
LR’s marketing director, Philippa Charlton said: “ISO 27001 is a certification of best practice for ISMS. Maritime safety has been boosted following the recognition of Iridium’s satellite service as a provider for the international Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) – giving ship operators more options when protecting vessels and crew, said IEC Telecom.
JRC/Alphatron Marine has installed new VSTEP simulators at its training facility in Rotterdam and re-introduced ECDIS Type Specific Training and Marcom-A training.
The ECDIS Type Specific Training for both JRC and Wärtsilä (Transas) ECDIS is offered for an international audience in English and provides the required knowledge for the general use of the ECDIS as well as a detailed introduction to the system’s features.
For ECDIS training, JRC/Alphatron Marine requires that the trainee has adequate experience on ECDIS and has accomplished the IMO Model Course 1.27
The Marcom-A training represents the General Operating Certificate which allows users to operate maritime radio transmission equipment. Other facets of this study include the international GMDSS regulations, compulsory books, emergency procedures and daily use of the onboard equipment. Marcom-A training will be given only in Dutch and is certified by Dutch authority ILenT.
The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), a neutral, non-profit group established to further digitalisation of container shipping through technology standards, in conjunction with its nine member carriers, has published the DCSA cybersecurity implementation guide. The guide aims to facilitate vessel readiness for the IMO Resolution MSC.428(98) on Maritime Cyber Risk Management in Safety Management Systems.
The best practices outlined by DCSA provide all shipping companies with a common language and a manageable, task-based approach for meeting the IMO’s January 2021 implementation timeframe.
The DCSA cybersecurity guide, DCSA Implementation Guide for Cyber Security on Vessels, can be freely downloaded from the DCSA website. The guide aligns with existing BIMCO and NIST (US National Institute of Standards and Technology) cyber risk management frameworks, enabling shipowners to effectively incorporate cyber risk management into their existing Safety Management Systems (SMS). The DCSA guide gives shipowners the tools they need to help designated technical crew members mitigate the risk of cyber attack, or contain damage (fail safe) and recover in the event of an attack.

The DCSA cybersecurity implementation guide breaks down the BIMCO framework into themes and maps these themes to the controls that underpin the NIST functional elements: Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, Recover. DCSA provides non-technical explanations and specific actions to be taken to address each NIST element in accordance with a company’s level of cyber maturity within each BIMCO theme. Following DCSA guidance will provide vessel owners with a catalogue of cyber security safeguards aligned with each vulnerability identified during risk assessment, together with notes explaining any residual risk.

Tromsø-based maritime digital platform provider Dualog has appointed a new sales manager with special responsibility for the UK market.
Richard Bjercke, formerly branch manager of OW Bunker Switzerland and co-head of the Residual Oil Desk at the global commodity trader Gunvor SA, brings solid expertise in the commercial and operational side of shipping to his new role. "I think my background helps us appreciate the concerns of the shipowners better, both when it comes to how IT must support operations as well as understanding the liability issues pertinent to maritime IT in terms of cybersecurity," said Mr Bjercke.
With less than a year before the new IMO 2021 resolution on cyber risk management comes into force, Dualog is determined to have the human resources to support shipping companies as they take on the challenge of ensuring compliance with the new regulations.

Brazil-based startup i4sea and Inmarsat have signed an agreement for i4sea to join a group of certified application providers to provide a dedicated application for Inmarsat’s Fleet Data service.
Fleet Data collects data from onboard sensors, pre-processes that data, and uploads it to a central cloud-based database, equipped with a dashboard and an Application Programming Interface (API).
The partnership came as a result of the Bluetech Accelerator, a program created by the Portuguese Ministry of the Sea in 2019 to create an ecosystem of maritime innovation and business acceleration. i4sea was one of 20 startups around the world – and the only one from Latin America - selected to develop pilot projects with maritime market leaders including Inmarsat.
Headquartered in Salvador, Brazil and with offices in São Paulo, Shanghai and London, i4sea will provide a high-precision sea and weather forecasting application with up to seven days forecasting in advance through i4cast’s Atm Ocean tool.
“As a Certified Application Provider, we will be constantly developing new features to generate increasingly powerful tools for the maritime market,” said i4sea CEO Bruno Balbi. “Working with a company like Inmarsat is really a great deal for i4sea and this is the first smart system that integrates in a single platform, all the essential tools to support decision making regarding vessel’s maneuvers and port terminal’s operations,” he said.
Six integrated tools are offered and includes services such as ocean and weather hyperlocal forecasts, dynamic draft prediction, terminal efficiency analytics and analysis and prediction of siltation or erosion dynamics of the seabed.
“We are delighted to be working with such an innovative start-up such as i4Sea, a company we worked with as part of the Portuguese Bluetech accelerator programme earlier this year,” said Marco Cristoforo Camporeale, head of digital Solutions, Inmarsat Maritime. “
“This tie-up will allow ship operators and managers to both route plan and improve terminal efficiency and this is all achieved through the i4sea application on Fleet Data and via a secure platform that is fully scalable, fleet-wide and now commercially available on both Fleet Xpress and FleetBroadband,” said Mr Camporeale.
Currently, i4sea's clients include Brazilian companies such as TECON Salvador (Wilson, Sons), Açu Petróleo, CSN Coal and Ore Terminal, Cotegipe Port, Bahia’s Maritime Authority, Itajaí Port, Enseada, among others. There are also international contracts with the ports of Leixões and Sines, in Portugal.
Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has opened its first remote survey centre, located in the major maritime hub and port city of Rotterdam.
The centre is focussed on supporting remote service delivery capability and is part of BV’s North European Zone head office and BV’s Zone Marine Operations Centre.
“This is a new and important milestone in the Bureau Veritas global strategy of Digital Classification using digital technologies to transform the operating model of classification for the benefits of its clients,” sid Laurent Leblanc, senior vice- president, technical & operations.
Bureau Veritas has conducted a full program of tests and proof of concepts confirming that the relevant technologies are now mature enough to enable remote surveys. Technologies used include optimised live-streaming solutions; connected devices (smart phones, tablets, Go-Pro cameras, smart glasses, augmented reality); and connectivity on board – with improvements from 4G networks and 5G yet to be realised.
During the development process different operating modes were tested successfully in different modes of connectedness: offline, partly on-line, and fully online. These different modes reflect the need for different levels of connectedness. In the latter mode – the fastest and most comprehensive remote survey mode – the onboard client uses connected devices to show the ship’s condition in real time to a remote surveyor and this means a survey in real time can be closed at the end of a call.
Significant benefits to clients include speed of response and no travel or waiting time; optimisation in the decision-making process thanks to live-streaming solutions; continuous improvement in the quality of service; and cost control through overall reductions in travel time and arrangements.

The combination of remote surveyors, the marine operational centre surveyors and management support as well as close proximity to plan approval surveyors will allow the Remote Survey Centre, equipped with latest technology hardware and software tools, to deliver a high value service to clients.
