Rolls-Royce and Finnish shipowner Finferries report that they have signed a collaboration agreement to jointly develop new decision support systems for marine operations, as well as agreeing to work together on demonstrations of remote and autonomous ferry technologies.

The Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative (AAWA), led by Rolls-Royce, has published a whitepaper outlining the project’s vision of how remote and autonomous shipping will become a reality, which it claims will be “by the end of the decade.”

Inmarsat joins autonomous ship project

Inmarsat has joined the €6.6 million Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative (AAWA) recently launched by Rolls-Royce, a project which aims to produce the specification and preliminary designs for a range of ship solutions in the area of unmanned vessel operation.
