Scottish maritime technology provider MarineMTS has launched a new hardware system called Silverbox, used to manage electronic chart and navigational data updates on board ship.

Leading global dry bulk operator Oldendorff Carriers has agreed a deal to implement a new IT and communications package across 70 owned vessels in its fleet, incorporating Fleet Xpress and the Infinity Cube system developed by maritime technology services provider Navarino.

Direct ECDIS connection for Baltic warnings

The Baltic Navigational Warning Service, created as part of the STM (Sea Traffic Management) Validation project, has added a function to allow navigational warnings to be sent directly to an onboard ECDIS unit using digital machine to machine communication, automating the process to make information available more quickly and to reduce crew workloads.

Speedcast reports that it is partnering with SRH Marine to provide a new Navigation as a Service (NaaS) product, offering distribution of electronic navigational charts and updates over satellite, managed by Speedcast’s SIGMA Gateway platform linked with SRH’s Pilot service.

Teekay is to implement an improved vessel e-mail system across its 160-strong fleet, following the agreement of a new contract with Norwegian maritime IT company Dualog, the companies report.

Rotterdam begins ‘smart port’ project

The Port of Rotterdam Authority and IBM are to collaborate on a multi-year digitalisation initiative to improve port operations through the application of Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud technologies, including an upgrade of the infrastructure of the entire 42-kilometre site to facilitate the hosting of connected ships in the future.

A new series of four ‘smart’ shuttle tanker concept vessels being developed by Teekay are set to be fitted with Vessel Performance Management software from Wärtsilä subsidiary Eniram, alongside a range of other energy and emissions management systems and machinery, as part of a €110 million deal for Wärtsilä.

RINA increases digital focus

Italian class society RINA has announced its intention to shift to a more digitally-focused strategy, and launched a new Cloud-based platform called ‘Cube’ to assist clients in data-driven process optimisation and predictive asset management.

ShipServ has launched ‘Supplier Performance Report’, an addition to its monitoring and analytics tools that provides users with data on the procurement performance of every supplier that they transact with, enabling them to analyse trends and identify where improvements can be made.

Jotun goes digital on paint management

Jotun has begun using DNV GL’s Veracity platform to combine external and proprietary data sources in optimising the delivery of its maritime coatings at port, using an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) dataset to ensure it has the right amount of product in the right place.
