Remote control test completed on Helsinki ferry

Ice-class passenger ferry Suomenlinna II has completed a trial of a new remote control system, with the vessel remotely piloted through a test area near Helsinki harbour as part of a project carried out by ABB and Helsinki City Transport.

Rolls-Royce and Finnish state-owned ferry operator Finferries have completed a successful demonstration of what they claim is the world’s first fully autonomous ferry in an archipelago south of the city of Turku, Finland.

Wärtsilä has announced plans to build a new €200 million Smart Technology Hub in Finland, which will act as a centre of research, product development and production for the company when it opens in 2020.

An autonomous ship model has been successfully tested in Aker Arctic’s ice model test laboratory in Finland, the company reports.

Rolls-Royce and Finnish shipowner Finferries report that they have signed a collaboration agreement to jointly develop new decision support systems for marine operations, as well as agreeing to work together on demonstrations of remote and autonomous ferry technologies.

Rolls-Royce has opened a new research facility in Turku, Finland, to focus on technologies to support the growth of autonomous systems in the global shipping industry.

STM project expands

The Sea Traffic Management (STM) project has received EU funding from the Interreg Central Baltic Programme to support a new programme called EfficientFlow, which will aim to improve traffic management in the ports of Rauma, Finland and Gävle, Sweden, as well as STM-enabled traffic flow management for large ferries that sail through the archipelago between Sweden and Finland.

DIMECC, leader of the ‘One Sea – Autonomous Maritime Ecosystem’, has opened what it says is the first globally available test area for autonomous vessel projects in Finland. The test area will be open to anyone wishing to examine the success of their research into unmanned ship systems in open waters, the company says.

The VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland reports that it has developed a new steering system to be used by remote-monitored and controlled autonomous ships, which will be applied to navigation systems and ship autopilots with the aim of steering ships automatically.

Rolls-Royce has announced the latest stage in its research and development plans to make remote and autonomous shipping a reality, confirming that Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation – has agreed to provide “a significant research grant” to fund further investment in an unmanned ship R&D centre in Turku, Finland.
