GX "remains on schedule" despite sanctions

Inmarsat has moved to allay fears that fresh US sanctions against Russia in response to the Ukraine crisis could derail its launch schedule for Global Xpress, with two launches currently planned to take place with International Launch Services (ILS) at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan during 2014.

Four more O3b satellites ready for launch

O3b Networks today announced that its second batch of four Ka-band satellites has begun its journey from the Thales Alenia Space facility in Rome to the Centre spatial guyanais (CSG) in Kourou, French Guiana, from where they will be launched in late June.

Royal Caribbean reports that bandwidth speeds exceeding 500 Mbps have been achieved during system tests for the O3b satellite communications solution it is rolling out on two of its cruise ships.

Cobham announces two GX antennas

Cobham SATCOM has announced that two new SAILOR antennas will be available this summer to prepare for Inmarsat’s forthcoming Global Xpress Ka-band service.

Inmarsat has reported that the first Inmarsat-5 Ka-band satellite in its Global Xpress constellation has arrived at its geosynchronous orbital location, and has begun payload testing.

Christmas has come a week early for Inmarsat as the company has announced that it is to acquire distribution partner Globe Wireless for $45 million, while also confirming the signing of a deal to make its largest maritime partner Astrium Services a distributor for Global Xpress.

Kymeta Corporation, which develops flat-panel antenna technologies based on metamaterials, has announced that it has successfully demonstrated bi-directional high-speed internet connectivity with a Ka-band satellite.

First GX satellite launched successfully

Inmarsat has successfully launched the first of three Global Xpress (GX) satellites, a major step forward in its bid to create the first global Ka-band satellite network for commercial use.
