Marlink buys partner Telemar

Marlink is to take over the business of maritime satcom provider Telemar Group, with Marlink owner Apax Partners signing a definitive agreement to acquire the company from its current shareholders.

Marlink reports that the second generation of its XChange communications management hardware is now available.

Essberger fleet moves to VSAT

The Hamburg-headquartered John T. Essberger (JTE) Group is to move its entire fleet to VSAT, which will act as the primary communication system on all of the company’s 22 chemical tankers and nine dry cargo vessels. Installation is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Passenger vessel bandwidth boost

Marlink reports that it has extended the bandwidth and connectivity options available to both MSC Cruises and Stena Line, covering a total of more than 35 existing ships among the two operators as well as further newbuilds.

Marlink and SpeedCast have signed new ‘strategic alliances’ with Inmarsat, under which both satcom service providers have committed to each introducing approximately 2,000 vessels to Inmarsat’s new Fleet Xpress service over a five-year period – a total of some 4,000 new ships for the Ka-band VSAT service.

Marlink reports that its Sealink VSAT service is now available with global coverage through 60 cm Ku-band antennas, as opposed to the 1m antennas previously required.

Marlink reports that it has been contracted to implement the KeepUp@Sea IT operational platform from fellow Norwegian company Palantir on 110 vessels for shipping company CMA CGM.

Inmarsat has announced the full commercial launch of Fleet Xpress, the maritime broadband service operating over its Global Xpress Ka-band network, backed by L-band FleetBroadband as a back-up.

Marlink Universal Card updated

Marlink has introduced its new Universal Card Go, a multi-band prepaid card for crew internet access and voice calling that can be used across all Marlink VSAT and MSS services, including the recently introduced 1GB plans offered with separate prepaid crew access.
