Marine insurance company The Swedish Club reports that navigational claims such as collisions, contacts and groundings have remained at consistent levels despite advances in technology and safety systems.

A team from the University of Leicester is trialling a concept that uses satellite imagery to more accurately locate vessels and aircraft at sea, with the hope of improving safety and aiding rescue operations, such as the search for missing Malaysian flight MH370.

Vesper Marine reports that it has won a contract to provide Virtual Automatic Identification System (AIS) Beacons to mark several dangerous reefs in the Bay of Plenty, part of New Zealand’s North Island.
