Iridium NEXT satellites enter service

Thuraya signs nanosatellite MoU

Thuraya reports that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with space start-up ELSE, a Swiss company developing a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation of nanosatellites, to create a strategic alliance between the two organisations and grow Thuraya’s future capabilities in the M2M and IoT sectors.

Inmarsat CEO Rupert Pearce says that he is aiming to introduce 10 Mbps services on FleetBroadband in the early part of the next decade, once the company has completed the launch of its Inmarsat-6 generation of satellites.

Iridium adds eighth SpaceX launch for NEXT

Iridium has contracted to add an eighth SpaceX Falcon 9 launch to its Iridium NEXT programme, as part of a ‘rideshare’ agreement the will see the launch shared with the twin-satellites of the NASA/GFZ Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On (GRACE-FO) mission.

Intelsat 33e, the second of Intelsat’s EpicNG high throughput satellites (HTS), has successfully completed all in-orbit testing and entered service on 29 January 2017, the satellite operator has announced.

Iridium has completed the successful launch of its first ten Iridium NEXT satellites, with the satellites delivered into low-Earth orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on January 14.

New Iridium NEXT launch date confirmed

The first launch of Iridium’s NEXT generation of satellites, previously delayed following a launch anomaly during testing of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in 2016, has been given a revised target date of January 8, 2017.
