Iridium to support autonomous ship development

Iridium reports that it has signed a Letter of Intent with Rolls-Royce Marine (RRM), currently in the process of being acquired by Kongsberg, to support RRM’s autonomous vessel development programme by integrating L-band satellite services on Iridium’s forthcoming Certus network into the RRM range of Ship Intelligence systems.

A new COLREG-compliant collision avoidance system developed by the MTCAS project is scheduled for its first demonstration test in Germany this week, in Wilhelmshaven on September 6th.

YARA reports that it has signed a deal with shipyard VARD worth approximately NOK 250 million (US$30 million) to build the autonomous container vessel Yara Birkeland, scheduled to be delivered for launch in early 2020.

NYK, and its Group companies MTI, Keihin Dock Co, and Japan Marine Science (JMS), have announced their participation in a demonstration project being carried out by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism (MLIT) to demonstrate remote operation of an unmanned ship.

Samsung agrees Cloud deal with Amazon

Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has announced a deal to make Amazon Web Services (AWS) its preferred Cloud services provider as it continues development of its smart ship and autonomous vessel programmes.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced the launch of an ambitious research partnership in Japan aimed at developing an advanced navigation support system for use at sea.

Kongsberg has agreed a £500 million deal to acquire Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine, buying the marine products, systems and aftermarket services operations put up for sale by Rolls-Royce after the UK company conducted a strategic review of its business at the beginning of the year and decided to narrow its focus to concentrate on the aerospace, defence and power systems markets.

An autonomous ship model has been successfully tested in Aker Arctic’s ice model test laboratory in Finland, the company reports.

The Nautical Institute has insisted that all vessels, autonomous or not, should comply with the COLREGs, as the process to decide how to regulate unmanned systems begins at IMO.

Classification society ClassNK has released its Guidelines for Concept Design of Automated Operation/Autonomous Operation of ships, to promote safety in the design of automated ship operation systems.
