Korean shipping companies agree ECDIS contracts

Transas has agreed two new contracts to supply ECDIS systems to shipping companies in Korea, with Dong-A Tanker and Woolim Shipping set to implement the company’s equipment on their vessels.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}The deals were agreed in cooperation with Transas’s local partner in the country, Arion Communication.

The Navi-Sailor 4000 ECDIS will be delivered to nine Dong-A Tanker vessels, with an option to increase to dual ECDIS and to also extend the roll out to more than 20 vessels in the future.

The package includes the Transas Admiralty Data Service (TADS) for delivery of official digital charts and updates.

The systems will be installed and supported locally by Arion Communication and its subsidiary Sealink Electronics in Busan. Transas and Sealink have built a training and service centre in the city, where most major Korean shipping companies have their bases.

“We have considered various factors which may affect operational costs in the next five years, like ECDIS implementation, crew training, maintenance and data services,” said Ahn Min-han, executive director of Dong-A Tanker.

“The most important factor is that our captains and crews, who have already experienced using various brands of ECDIS, are very satisfied with the Navi-Sailor system from Transas.”

The other contract, with Woolim Shipping, includes the supply of the Transas Navi-Sailor 4000 ECDIS Premium system with Radar Overlay for ten oil & chemical tankers, again relying on Arion and Sealink for implementation. Woolim Shipping currently owns 22 such tankers.

Transas’ ability to agree these Korean contracts has been facilitated by its recent receipt of ECDIS type-approval from the Korean Registry (Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute).

The approval certifies the system’s compliance with all ECDIS-related regulations valid for the South Korean flag state, covering Navi-Sailor ECDIS in Premium and Standard configurations as well as all supplementary components.{/mprestriction}
