Sonardyne tests navigation systems for autonomous surface vehicles

Marine robotics company, Sonardyne International. has demonstrated technologies that will aid autonomous vehicle operations in challenging environments under a project funded by the UK’s national Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA).

Sonardyne’s SPRINT-Nav hybrid inertial navigation instrument was integrated into a SEA-KIT X and tested against local real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS positioning, as part of the DASA programme to fast-track autonomous vehicle capability in challenging or harsh conditions.

Loss of satellite-based timing signals needed for navigation and positioning can occur in ports and harbours around tall structures or close to cliffs or inside fjords, where GPS or GNSS receivers may not have a clear line of sight with the sky. It can also happen through deliberate signal jamming or degrading of performance, known as spoofing.

Sonardyne’s SPRINT-Nav is already proven as a reliable navigation instrument for unmanned underwater vehicles, which operate in what is effectively a GPS or GNSS denied environment. Now it will also be used to provide a high integrity, continuously available navigation solution for a USV, like SEA-KIT X, operating in littoral zones in water depths up to 150 m.

SEA-KIT is a 10,000 nautical mile-range vessel able to carry up to 2.5 tonnes of payload and deploy and recover autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). This capability, and flexibility, means it is well suited to support naval missions including intelligence gathering, hydrographic survey and as a communications gateway.

Ioseba Tena, global business manager, Defence and Marine Robotics at Sonardyne, said: “Most USVs rely on uninterrupted GPS or GNSS signal updates to inform their situational awareness and plot a course safely. When there’s no signal, or what’s called spoofing or jamming, USVs must consider alternative navigation sensors and instruments or they need to be remotely piloted adding expense and risk to over-the-horizon operations.

“By integrating SPRINT-Nav onto a USV, such as SEA-KIT, we have shown we can overcome this challenge, providing a continuous and resilient navigation in denied environments capability that will be ideally suited to challenging operations such as mine-counter measures (MCM).”

In total, 21 contracts were awarded by DASA, on behalf of the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), amounting to £2.1 million in funding. The awards are part of the Autonomy in a Dynamic World competition, launched last year, which aims to address factors that affect the military effectiveness of current autonomous technologies.

DASA project manager Helen Mullender said: “The work being funded is to mature autonomous systems with the capability to operate on demand, under all conditions that may be encountered. Military operations are undertaken in all kinds of challenging environment. The inclusion of autonomous systems in these operations will demand their ability to operate effectively and efficiently regardless of the environment.”

The competition is funded through the MOD’s Chief Scientific Adviser’s Research Programme’s Autonomy Incubator project that aims to: Identify and develop underpinning research and technologies to support the development and fielding of unmanned systems across defence which may be matured through the DSTL Autonomy Programme and other Research and Development programmes. {/mprestriction}

Updates are transmitted via a secure link direct from Voyager Worldwide straight to the Voyager PC onboard to ensure vessels always have the latest information and prevent compliance issues.

    To complement the new fully automated update process, the size of the quarterly AVCS Admiralty Information Overlay update has been reduced by more than 85 per cent from 25MB to an average of 3MB to make ECDIS updating easier, faster and more cost-effective. The result is very simple fully automated electronic delivery of all updates and New Editions and smaller, more cost-effective data downloads that, together, remove any residual need to send physical CDs or DVDs to ships.

    “With its new levels of automation and enhanced user experience, this new version of Voyager PLANNING STATION provides comprehensive visibility of vessels against their planned routes and seamless distribution, updating and management of the data needed for e-Navigation. The result is better operational oversight that helps ship managers to safely and more efficiently manage their vessels and provides a faster, easier way for the bridge team to meet PSC and vetting requirements,” said Voyager Worldwide CEO, Kent Lee.

    In addition, a new built-in port to port routeing function enables users to select their departure and arrival port and generate a route. Routes automatically appear on either ENCs or Voyager’s integrated GIS map making it easy to refine waypoints to meet specific voyage requirements before clicking to identify and order the ENCs and other products needed for safe and compliant passage.

    For shore-based users who want to more clearly understand vessel status compared to the planned voyage, the enhanced Route sharing module now automatically uploads saved routes to Voyager FLEET INSIGHT, Voyager Worldwide’s web platform to allow ship management to monitor vessels on a 24/7 basis. Using Voyager FLEET INSIGHT, vessels can be monitored on a PC in the office as well as on the go via a tablet and smartphone.

    To provide better visibility of vessels’ compliance status and help reduce ECDIS and ENC related PSC observations and deficiencies, Voyager PLANNING STATION also now shows the details of when the ECDIS was last updated and shows when updates have not been applied. Voyager FLEET INSIGHT also enables vessels’ ENC, paper chart and publication orders to be viewed as an overlay on planned routes to enable more efficient order checking and approval and help reduce unnecessary purchasing.

  • LR and the National Physical Laboratory partner on marine autonomy assurance

    Lloyd's Register (LR) and the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) have teamed up to collaborate on marine autonomy projects to ensure that appropriate levels of service and competence can be achieved within the maritime industry.

    As part of the framework agreement, the two organisations will collectively establish and enhance the current body of knowledge for marine autonomy. This combination of skills, expertise and experience will be built on to bring clarity to the requirements for the assurance of autonomy and assist stakeholders in realising the potential of these systems in the market.

    This will allow standards to be set and consistently applied and will therefore bring surety to risk management and certification for autonomous and unmanned systems and vessels.

    By partnering with NPL, LR will enhance the delivery of its services and assurance in marine autonomy and gain access to a wide range of knowledge and expertise developed in other aligned domains.

    LR and NPL are currently working together to deliver a scope of services to the THEMIS Project, to demonstrate the feasibility for the world’s largest ocean-going autonomous vessel, which is part funded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s (MPA) Maritime Innovation and Technology (MINT) fund.

    NPL’s head of Digital, Neil Stansfield, said: “The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is excited by the opportunities presented in this collaboration with Lloyd’s Register, where the two organisations complementary capabilities are well suited to addressing the challenge of assuring marine autonomous systems. This work represents an important part of the UK’s national programme to deliver confidence in the intelligent and effective use of data, which is being conducted with a range of partners across sectors and with a specific focus on autonomous systems. NPL is applying a combination of measurement skills, expertise and experience, in areas as diverse as sensor characterisation, data quality and AI validation, to support partners in the development of new tests, standards and regulations for the safety of autonomous systems. This collaboration with Lloyd’s Register will help ensure the UK maintains its global leadership in the marine services Sector, where the autonomous shipping sector is expected to represent a global $52bn market opportunity by 2050.”
