Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha has signed a strategic framework agreement with Microsoft Japan, setting out a long-term collaboration aimed at strengthening digital capabilities across the shipowner’s global shipping and logistics operations.

The agreement builds on NYK’s medium-term management plan, Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026, which identifies digital transformation as a key part of its business strategy. In the company’s NYK Group DX Story, published in November 2025, NYK describes digital transformation as “a driving force that creates new value.”

The partnership is structured around four priority areas. These include building the technology foundation for digital transformation through cloud infrastructure, data platforms for generative AI and stronger cybersecurity. NYK also plans to expand programmes that develop digital skills across its workforce to support the practical use of generative AI.

The agreement also targets operational improvements through wider use of AI agents and data across business processes. For a global shipowner, that could influence how operational information is collected, analysed and shared across vessels, offices and logistics networks.

A fourth priority focuses on creating new business models by combining the NYK Group’s maritime and logistics expertise with Microsoft’s digital technologies.

After investing heavily in onboard connectivity and digital platforms, many fleets are directing attention to how cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity can support day-to-day operations and commercial decision making. The next stage is less about introducing standalone digital tools and more about connecting systems, people and data across the organisation.

NYK said it will continue creating new social value through shipping and logistics while supporting the further growth of the maritime and global logistics industries through digital transformation and the development of next-generation digital talent.
