IMO issues guidelines on cyber risk Featured

IMO has issued new guidelines on Maritime Cyber Risk Management, available free for download, containing a number of recommendations for shipping companies on how to protect their technology assets against digital disaster.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}“Risk management is fundamental to safe and secure shipping operations. Risk management has traditionally been focused on operations in the physical domain, but greater reliance on digitisation, integration, automation and network-based systems has created an increasing need for cyber risk management in the shipping industry,” IMO says, in the document.

“Predicated on the goal of supporting safe and secure shipping, which is operationally resilient to cyber risks, these guidelines provide recommendations that can be incorporated into existing risk management processes. In this regard, the guidelines are complementary to the safety and security management practices established by this Organization.”

The guidelines include an introduction to the different elements of cyber risk management, a list of potentially vulnerable systems, and information on where to look for best practice advice from other industry stakeholders.
