GMDSS system for South Africa

Frequentis is to install a coastal infrastructure for Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) communications in South Africa, on behalf of the South African Department of Transport in collaboration with Telkom Maritime Services.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}The new system will replace the old coastal Maritime Distress Communications System (MDCS) and will service coastal waters, extending 2,800 kilometres. Prime contractor for the project is South African Frequentis partner company, AME Telecommunications.

The Frequentis Maritime Communication System (MCS) 3020 IP and Tracking and Tracing System (T&T) will be installed in Cape Town, at a back-up facility in Klipheuwel and at a variety of remote sites.

The system will be capable of transmitting voice messages, weather forecasts and navigation warnings on any selected HF transmitter/s and VHF transmitter/s, in any combination and from any operator workstation.

“The Frequentis maritime information solution, T&T, provides a solid foundation for a fully integrated maritime solution, while the MCS allows the transmission and receipt of DSC (Area A1, A3), NAVTEX, as well as the capability to listen to a combined CH16 radio feed and combined HF receiver feed,” said Khashayar Saravandi-Rad, Frequentis.

“We are looking forward to providing this global distress and safety system to South Africa and assisting them with enhanced communications.”{/mprestriction}
