OneWeb shows commitment to responsible space program

OneWeb and OneWeb Satellites, a joint venture between Airbus and OneWeb, have announced plans to advance the OneWeb Responsible Space program with a commitment to implement an advanced-technology grappling fixture, developed by Altius Space Machines, on OneWeb’s satellites.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"} OneWeb and OneWeb Satellites have a goal to ensure multiple types of removal technology are developed and embedded in every satellite launched to prevent the creation of space debris.

“Space has never been more accessible than it is today, and there are tremendous benefits for humanity to be gained through space applications,” said Tim Maclay, OneWeb director of mission systems engineering.  “It is critical we do all we can to employ responsible design and operational practices to ensure a sustainable environment for future generations. OneWeb is proud to be leading in this effort and hope our actions can be a model for others in the industry.”

By partnering with Altius Space Machines, whose team includes RUAG Space USA and Astroscale, OneWeb Satellites is helping to implement a low-cost, advanced grappling fixture across the OneWeb constellation that can support a variety of capture techniques for satellite servicing and disposal.  This design is consistent with the CONFERS Recommended Design and Operational Practices for satellite servicing, including working to minimise the probability of releasing secondary debris in the course of servicing operations.

OneWeb Satellites CEO Tony Gingiss commented: “OneWeb Satellites has dramatically reduced the cost and speed of satellite manufacturing, making space far more accessible.  As a result, thousands of new satellites – both our own and our competitors’ – will be launched in the coming years.  From its inception, OneWeb Satellites has also committed to doing its part to ensure we help keep space clean. Our partnership with Altius and RUAG for the grappling interface is one more concrete step in fulfillment of that commitment.”

The connectivity provided by RG 300 allows the exchange of photos, videos, technical drawings or to retrieve spare part catalogues. Direct video conferencing with qualified personnel is also possible.

    Using the shipznet solution, service employees are able to use mobile broadband connectivity in the engine room via mobile phone, tablet, laptop, or any mobile device. This can significantly shorten the on-site service calls as employees do not have to be on deck to use their mobile phones for finding the answers to technical questions they have.

    According to shipznet, waiting time for feedback, because no specialist is available in the office, should not be underestimated. shipznet RG 300 enables remote communication by specialists in the headquarters. This means that experts do not always have to be present for the service operations on site. According to shipznet, experts are expensive and difficult to obtain and in many cases service employees are “instructed” remotely by the experts.

    The system enables service staff to operate far inside the ship while being connected to remote experts and engineers on shore.  This is especially important in today’s current climate with COVID-19 affecting business as usual. With service travels currently limited or impossible due to health concerns, shipznet RG 300 service experts can help remotely look deep inside a ship without travelling. 

    shipnetz’s RG 300 solution is currently in use at some large service companies. It is delivered in a small suitcase with handy size format. The construction of the 4G / LTE antenna with a range of up to 60km ship to shore and the router with 300 Mbit / sec. is possible within 15 minutes, according to shipznet.

    The purchase of the shipznet RG 300 will reportedly pay for itself after a single service call.
