In this edition – Giampiero Soncini, CEO, SpecTec.
Digital Ship’s ‘CEO Insights’ feature asks the leaders of maritime IT companies to give their views on what makes a successful business in the sector, and how they go about the daily running of a shipping technology company.
What's the first thing you do each morning when you start your workday, and the last thing you do in the evening?
GS: We are a global company, so I have a 12 to 14 hour a day work routine.
In the morning I catch up on e-mails that came in from Asia Pacific over night and read the news. During the day I work with EMEA. In the evening, I respond to e-mails from the USA, which come in during the late evening, and read the news.
On a day-to-day basis, how much of your work is structured and planned, and how much is done ad-hoc in response to daily events?
GS: Most of my activity is planned at least two months in advance. This is mostly because I spend a lot of time travelling across the world to meet with our customers on a regular basis, and those meetings have to be planned well in advance.
What is the single most important source of data for you when making strategic decisions for your company?
GS: Understanding the market trends and conditions and what is happening is crucial to ensuring we meet our customers’ needs. This is why we spend a lot of time collecting data from the market and staying up-to-date on the latest industry news. We have a 5, 10, and 15 year business plan, and we follow it.
How much of your decision making is collaborative, and how much is led by yourself?
GS: As the company grows it has become more and more of a collaborative process between the SpecTec Regional VPs and myself, along with support from our parent company Volaris Group.
What are the core components of your company's current strategy, and why do you believe that strategy will succeed?
GS: Being a part of a financially stable organisation that shares best practices and works with us to develop our strategy has helped us to build upon our business. Volaris has some extremely clear business methodologies, which have proven to be very successful and which we are implementing and applying to SpecTec.
Everything we do is measured, analysed and discussed in order to get better in all aspects of the business: service and customer satisfaction, product and profit. It is tough – at times very tough – as we analyse results and perform changes; but it works.
