Shipping companies lagging on latest web technologies

Research conducted by marketing agency Mabox Marine has suggested that 66 per cent of the top 100 companies in the shipping industry are falling foul of the latest Google rules on website responsiveness to mobile devices.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}Google’s search engine results place emphasis on websites being designed for mobile devices, and penalise the rankings of companies who have not built their websites with this in mind, resulting in a decline of more than 25 positions in some cases, according to Mabox.

The research also found a large disparity within different parts of the shipping industry, with 70 per cent of ship broking companies having already adopted the right technology, while only 25 per cent of ship building companies had embraced the mobile habits of web users.

However, Mabox notes that whilst the research does highlight a need for the majority of the industry to get on board with the latest technology, the shipping industry is ahead of many other industries, with only 18 per cent of websites worldwide meeting the mobile responsive rules.

“With the internet now the channel of choice for buyers searching for vendors, and mobiles/tablets becoming an increasingly important tool for browsing, having a responsive website must be a top priority for every organisation regardless of size,” said Mabox Marine director Tim Hallac.

“Whilst the industry has made some excellent progress there remains many companies in the shipping industry who are missing out on potentially valuable web visitors and business.”{/mprestriction}
