ClassNK and Liberian Registry begin e-Certificate trials

ClassNK has begun operational trials for a new ‘ClassNK e-Certificate’, a system to provide ships’ class certificates and statutory certificates issued on behalf of flag states in electronic format.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}The project aims to reduce the administrative burden of sending traditional paper certificates and managing them on board, while also making it easier to retrieve data on the certificates.

The project builds on a concept already implemented by the Liberian flag in issuing electronic certificates worldwide. ClassNK e-Certificates have been developed in line with the updated Guidelines for the Use of Electronic Certificates (FAL.5/Circ.39/Rev.2) issued by the IMO in April 2016.

As well as enabling the transmission and reception of data, the system also allows users to verify the authenticity of certificates online to ensure data has not been manipulated or falsified.

Currently ClassNK says it is testing system functions such as the transfer of data to ships at sea, and website access for the verification of electronic certificates. Operational trials are being carried out with Japanese shipping companies, in cooperation with the Liberian International Ship & Corporate registry (LISCR).{/mprestriction}
