ClassNK releases new version of hull software

ClassNK has released the latest version of its vessel design support software PrimeShip-HULL (HCSR), developed in response to the latest updates to the IACS Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers (CSR BC & OT).

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}The new version 5.0.0 incorporates rule amendments to CSR BC & OT (Rule Change Notice 1 to CSR 01 JAN 2017 version), while also expanding functionality within the application’s prescriptive calculation and direct strength assessment modules.

The calculation report function found in the prescriptive calculation software is now a stand-alone system, allowing users to create calculation reports while editing cross section data or operating the calculation window.

The prescriptive calculation software now also includes enhanced data linking capabilities, to add body plan data from 2D CAD software or to import transverse member data from NAPA Steel models into the initial design function of the software.

The direct strength assessment software now includes a ‘parameter check and update’ function which can detect model-dependent parameters and update them automatically, and the design support tool for yield assessment has also been streamlined.{/mprestriction}

  • ClassNK, JMU, NAPA complete feasibility study on 3D models for shipbuilding

    ClassNK, Japan Marine United (JMU), and NAPA have completed a joint feasibility study on 3D model-based plan approval using 3D CAD models as part of their technical investigation project.

    Shipbuilding designs are gradually transitioning from 2D drawings to those designed with 3D CAD software. Classification societies, whose plan approvals are currently based mostly on 2D drawings, are also required to develop a scheme for 3D CAD models from their submission to their examination completion.

    This project was conducted to examine the technical development required in each process of plan approval by JMU, NAPA, and ClassNK to realise 3D model-based plan approval. In the feasibility study, ClassNK conducted a trial evaluation for hull structural design on a 3D CAD model of 300,000DWT ore carrier designed and created by JMU, using NAPA Designer, a 3D CAD software application for ship design developed by NAPA, as a 3D model viewer. Plan submission, storage, and notification of examination results were made using the Society's electronic plan examination system NK-PASS.

    The investigation concluded that information required for class approval can be confirmed through a 3D CAD model, and that "NK-PASS" is also compatible with 3D CAD models. The results of this survey will serve as a basis for future technical studies, and the Society will continue to work with the industry to realise 3D model-based plan approval.

    Mr. Hayato Suga, corporate officer and director of plan approval and technical solution division said “This study has proven the future potential of 3D model-based approvals. 3D based design can be the key to improving digital solutions in the ship industry, including the ship design process, approval process and later fleet maintenance. I hope that the entire industry will also quickly realise the many opportunities and increased efficiency that can be achieved as a result of this initiative. The vessels of the future will be able to accommodate much better and safer designs in shorter amounts of time.”

    ClassNK Consulting Service has announced the launch of a cybersecurity training service (e-learning), developed in cooperation with KDDI Corporation (KDDI) and KDDI Digital Security (KDS).

    Main features include:

    • The program is focusing on the maritime industries.
    • The program supports Japanese and English and provides a certificate of completion after a comprehension test. This certificate can be used for an education record of Cybersecurity Management System.
    • The program is available anywhere and anytime via smart device and PC.
    • The program is certified by ClassNK in compliance with the Guidelines on Cybersecurity Onboard Ships Version 3, produced and supported by BIMCO (The Baltic and International Maritime Council).

    In a statement released by ClassNK, the classification society says that the increasing use of many solutions utilising “Big Data” and IoT technologies has brought benefits to the industry but it has also introduced cyber risks among maritime industries. Under these circumstances, it’s an important first step towards cyber safety for those who are engaged in ship operation and other related industries to gain proper knowledge. NKCS, KDDI and KDS offer a training program combining the companies’ expertise in offshore and onshore.
