MOL and Kawasaki partner on smart vessel steering

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has reached an agreement with Kawasaki Heavy Industries to jointly develop intelligent steering gear technologies, to improve vessel reliability and save energy in operations through the application of Big Data analytics.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}The project will focus on intelligent control of a vessel’s steering gear, with the new system to be installed on a very large crude carrier (VLCC) under construction at KHI for delivery to MOL.

The newly developed steering gear will be equipped with sensors that monitor pressure, flow rate, temperature of hydraulic oil, consumed power and other parameters, linked to a high-speed data acquisition system for data storage.

In addition to information from the steering gear, data will also be collected regarding other elements of vessel operation, such as speed, course, engine load and rudder angle. All of the collected data will then be analysed to identify potential improvements. The project is expected to be completed by the end of March 2021.{/mprestriction}
