Marlink announces tech start-up partnerships

Maritime satcom provider Marlink has announced two new partnerships with We4Sea and Transmetrics, to expand its portfolio of digital services for shipping clients and assist them in improving fuel efficiency and reducing operating costs.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}The strategic agreement with We4Sea will see the Dutch start-up leverage Marlink’s network to further develop its fuel efficiency systems, as part of Marlink’s Smart Connectivity strategy backing partners that can deliver new applications to support customers’ digitalisation efforts.

We4Sea specialises in digital monitoring systems to reduce fuel consumption and related emissions, using Digital Twin technology. The company’s applications combine position, speed, weather and cargo data within a web platform detailing actual fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The Digital Twin technology does not need additional hardware to be installed, and the online reporting is already certified to comply with new EU emissions reporting legislation, We4Sea says.

“We see a clear demand from our customers to deliver fuel efficiency solutions,” said Tore-Morten Olsen, president maritime, Marlink.

“This agreement with We4Sea will allow us to offer a highly intelligent and cost-efficient solution based on Big Data technologies, which will support our customers’ ambition for greener, more environmentally-friendly shipping.”

Marlink’s strategic business partnership with Transmetrics, a start-up headquartered in Bulgaria, aims to support the development of a predictive logistics optimisation platform for maritime customers by using Big Data analytics to optimise the management of empty containers.

Transmetrics has developed a predictive asset management tool called AssetMetrics, which applies AI algorithms for data cleansing and demand forecasting, suggesting the optimal storage, repositioning and maintenance strategy for empty containers as well as the optimal levels of ‘safety stock’ at each location.

“The maritime transportation industry is experiencing phenomenal changes thanks to new technologies such as Big Data and predictive analytics,” said Mr Olsen.

“Our agreement will leverage Marlink’s satcoms connectivity combined with Transmetrics’ intelligent software solution to streamline shipping companies’ container flows, prevent empty capacities on vessels and ultimately make our cargo customers more efficient.”{/mprestriction}
