Data utilisation platform launched

Ship Data Centre (ShipDC), a wholly owned subsidiary set up by ClassNK, has announced the global launch of IoS-OP (Internet of ships open platform), a platform for data distribution and utilisation under common rules.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"}The aim of the IoS-OP is to create a new maritime cluster in the digital age that will continue throughout future generations. In order to accomplish this, IoS-OP distinguishes cooperative domain and competitive domain. In the cooperative domain, IoS-OP users will collect and safely store data at ShipDC and ShipDC will distribute the data under common rules agreed by the stakeholders. In the competitive domain, IoS-OP users will utilise the data and create data-driven innovation.

Speaking on the launch of IoS-OP, Mr. Yasuhiro Ikeda, president of ShipDC said: “We have prepared a platform where everyone could make data-driven innovation under the agreed rules. Now, it is time to invite everyone to join the initiative to create innovative solution in the maritime industry.”

    ClassNK, Japan Marine United (JMU), and NAPA have completed a joint feasibility study on 3D model-based plan approval using 3D CAD models as part of their technical investigation project.

    Shipbuilding designs are gradually transitioning from 2D drawings to those designed with 3D CAD software. Classification societies, whose plan approvals are currently based mostly on 2D drawings, are also required to develop a scheme for 3D CAD models from their submission to their examination completion.

    This project was conducted to examine the technical development required in each process of plan approval by JMU, NAPA, and ClassNK to realise 3D model-based plan approval. In the feasibility study, ClassNK conducted a trial evaluation for hull structural design on a 3D CAD model of 300,000DWT ore carrier designed and created by JMU, using NAPA Designer, a 3D CAD software application for ship design developed by NAPA, as a 3D model viewer. Plan submission, storage, and notification of examination results were made using the Society's electronic plan examination system NK-PASS.

    The investigation concluded that information required for class approval can be confirmed through a 3D CAD model, and that "NK-PASS" is also compatible with 3D CAD models. The results of this survey will serve as a basis for future technical studies, and the Society will continue to work with the industry to realise 3D model-based plan approval.

    Mr. Hayato Suga, corporate officer and director of plan approval and technical solution division said “This study has proven the future potential of 3D model-based approvals. 3D based design can be the key to improving digital solutions in the ship industry, including the ship design process, approval process and later fleet maintenance. I hope that the entire industry will also quickly realise the many opportunities and increased efficiency that can be achieved as a result of this initiative. The vessels of the future will be able to accommodate much better and safer designs in shorter amounts of time.”

    Podium ingests, unifies and visualises billions of data points and scales to accommodate user demands and data volumes, whilst maintaining complete consistency in terms of output for all users.

    In addition, the Podium partnership program will enable start-ups and existing digital providers to expand their maritime presence easily by accessing StratumFive’s global client base, data holdings and technical infrastructure.

    Podium launches with a series of in-house options including voyage monitoring, weather routing and StratumFive’s next generation compliance and tracking applications.

    “With many years spent in operations around the world, I have been frustrated by the inefficiencies and costs caused by poor data acquisition, processing and communication across applications and stakeholders,” said Mike Powell, strategy director, StratumFive.

    “Until now, digitalisation has often made things worse for people working on ships and at shore, as increasing enterprise-wide data and information demands require too much manual intervention and effort. Currently, high levels of activity do not always equal productivity.

    “Podium is designed to be the workspace for the whole enterprise, linking data and applications, ensuring all stakeholders not only start from the same page, but also have the tools they need to maximise the efficiency and value of their part of the voyage.”

    Ross Martin, COO, StratumFive, added: “It is true that shipping businesses globally are currently not reaping the promised rewards of digitalisation - but Podium provides the solution that our industry desperately needs to realise cost savings and other operational efficiencies.

    StratumFive consulted closely with the industry in the development of Podium. Major owners and operators are already using the platform across their daily operations, with reportedly more preparing to adopt the technology in the near future.

    StormGeo and DNV GL have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to drive digitalisation and data standardisation in the maritime industry.

  • ClassNK Consulting launches cybersecurity e-learning

    ClassNK Consulting Service has announced the launch of a cybersecurity training service (e-learning), developed in cooperation with KDDI Corporation (KDDI) and KDDI Digital Security (KDS).

    Main features include:

    • The program is focusing on the maritime industries.
    • The program supports Japanese and English and provides a certificate of completion after a comprehension test. This certificate can be used for an education record of Cybersecurity Management System.
    • The program is available anywhere and anytime via smart device and PC.
    • The program is certified by ClassNK in compliance with the Guidelines on Cybersecurity Onboard Ships Version 3, produced and supported by BIMCO (The Baltic and International Maritime Council).

    In a statement released by ClassNK, the classification society says that the increasing use of many solutions utilising “Big Data” and IoT technologies has brought benefits to the industry but it has also introduced cyber risks among maritime industries. Under these circumstances, it’s an important first step towards cyber safety for those who are engaged in ship operation and other related industries to gain proper knowledge. NKCS, KDDI and KDS offer a training program combining the companies’ expertise in offshore and onshore.
