KONGSBERG and DNV GL have signed an agreement to enable customers of KONGSBERG’s Vessel Insight data infrastructure solution to share their data for use in DNV GL's digital class and assurance services.

{mprestriction ids="1,2"} Vessel Insight will be used to collect and transfer data from vessels to DNV GL, which will enable DNV GL to perform digital class and assurance services.

By combining DNV GL’s unique expertise in digital class and assurance solutions and KONGSBERG’s data infrastructure specifically developed for the maritime sector, we are putting together necessary pieces of a puzzle. Together, we want to help our customers see the full picture,” said Hege Skryseth, president, Kongsberg Digital and EVP KONGSBERG.

“Currently, most class inspections require the surveyors to be onboard the ships. However, we can now perform some surveys by analysing digitally obtained data on shore. By enabling customers to share their data via KONGSBERG’s Vessel Insight, we can expand the amount of data we are able to access and offer even more class and assurance services digitally. This will help customers not only to reduce their costs, but streamline their daily operations,” commented Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO, DNV GL – Maritime.

KONGSBERG and DNV GL have a pre-existing, long-standing relationship within the maritime industries, ranging from class and certification services via consultancy to research. Through this agreement KONGSBERG and DNV GL hope to accelerate the adoption of digital capabilities and technologies in a safe, reliable and sustainable manner for the maritime industry.  {/mprestriction}

    Klaveness Ship Management has expanded its contract with DNV GL after a successful pilot of the DNV GL Veracity platform.

    The contract expansion will see another eight Klaveness vessels use Veracity. According to the companies, the pilot project, which began in 2019, indicated that a reduction in fuel consumption was possible by combining and visualising operational, positioning and engine data.

  • Wärtsilä Translink certified compliant with latest DNV GL cybersecurity rules

    Wärtsilä has been awarded a DNV GL type-approval certificate and cybersecurity certification by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for its Translink solution, part of the company’s connected ECDIS concept.

    The cybersecurity verification has been issued according to the updated DNV GL rules and the internationally recognised standard for cybersecurity for bridge and navigation systems, IEC61162-460.

    Translink is a system that comprises the hardware, router, and software components. Together, they ensure that data can be encrypted as it is transmitted across the network using the latest protocols of cybersecurity. The certificates validate that the Translink Gateway has the key components in place to ensure secure operations. They also denote Wärtsilä’s commitment to developing cyber secure products in support of critical infrastructure and operations.


    Wärtsilä achieved the certification after in-depth analysis by DNV GL, verifying that the system follows best practices on cybersecurity. The product is type approved and ready to be applied for vessels with the DNV GL Cyber Secure Class Notation, while the IEC reference aligns it with the industry prerequisites, as well as any regulatory requirements.


    “Digitalisation offers more efficient and better ways of operating and designing vessel equipment, such as integrated voyage planning including the remote update of ECDIS charts. With a 3rd party cyber verification, vessel owners can take advantage of such new technologies with assurance that it follows best practice cyber security design. Wärtsilä Voyage has achieved the first Cyber Secure Type Approval using the updated February 2020 Type approval programme,” said Jarle Coll Blomhoff, group leader Cyber Safety & Security, DNV GL.


    “Great work has been done to ensure that Wärtsilä Translink not only complies, but sets the standard for ship-to-shore data exchange through secure channels. The full compliancy with IEC61162-460 and DNV GL Cyber Secure rules takes Wärtsilä Translink to an unprecedented level of security, quality and trust,” commented Anton Karelskiy, solution manager, Wärtsilä Voyage.


    Following more than ten years of experience in connecting ECDIS with implementation and certification of four generations of cybersecurity solutions, Translink provides a cyber secure gateway for Wärtsilä Navigation systems to the outside world, including for connecting ports or revolutionising voyage planning with the new Wärtsilä Navi-Planner.

Theyr will collaborate with SPRINT partner, the University of Southampton on the development of a marine vessel routing application that will enable a cleaner future for commercial shipping.

    Podium launches with a series of in-house options including voyage monitoring, weather routing and StratumFive’s next generation compliance and tracking applications.

    “With many years spent in operations around the world, I have been frustrated by the inefficiencies and costs caused by poor data acquisition, processing and communication across applications and stakeholders,” said Mike Powell, strategy director, StratumFive.

    “Until now, digitalisation has often made things worse for people working on ships and at shore, as increasing enterprise-wide data and information demands require too much manual intervention and effort. Currently, high levels of activity do not always equal productivity.
